Love, Dona ( Part 3)

Late Nov 1989.
I juggle / attempt a few more jobs in the meantime. They range from donating my sperm to working at a gas station to volunteering for a staircase case design study, in which "volunteers" were asked to fall down on it.
The last job that made me real mad was at a carpet showroom. It was bang opposite the Brookhaven Marta Station. Even though the job was to sell carpets, the owner once put me in a Pillory out on the street. I was tied, my head placed in between two logs of wood. By the time I realize, the whole story, it was too late.
In the medieval times, criminals were put in Pillories to get abuse and humiliated, before the punishments meted out to them.
There I was, standing with my hands and neck squeezed between two pieces of logs - in full public view - under the sun. Anger, and hurt visible in my eyes and pedestrians and those driving by looking at me with curiosity. I am calming myself by saying " This is Halal Rozi...Its ok - I can take it!"
But I could not... I leave that job the next day!
These days when we do workshop on entrepreneurship under my NGO " Threshold Initiators", we emphasize the need to be do business with ethics. That businessman, who put me in a Pillory as a marketing gimmick was not a good man... not an ethical one for sure!
Dec First week, 1989.
I receive a court summon asking me to appear for a "deportation hearing" at the INS building, downtown Atlanta.
Until now, I was hoping that the "system" after looking at my academic record, would let me off the hook. I will be forgiven for a lack of judgment or whatever. Now, my humiliating deportation to India is certain. I hear stories after stories of how people were taken straight from the courtroom to the airport. Deported.
The court hearing is still a month away. On the top of the summon they have written " Shahid SAYED V/S United States of America!", which means my personal rebellion has taken a new form now.
I have no choice but to fight and rebel against the country that I travel so far to.... a country I loved.
Dona and I have decided to not engage an attorney but show up ourselves at the court. Whatever free time I find from my jobs, is spend on researching the INS laws that I was charged with. I have decided to represent myself at the hearing.
Second week December 1989.
I get a call from the INS agent asking me to see him in his office. He has a proposal for me. I meet him. He is willing to drop all charges he says, "If I help him bust a drug dealer." He informs me how they will put “body armor” on me, "wire me" and provide me the address to show up as a customer for buying drugs. They will listen to the conversation and at some point of time; they will barge in and arrest everyone.
I will be a free man again!
Growing up in India, like most Urdu readers of my generation, I too wanted to be Ali Imran of Ibne Safi's detective novels. The problem was unlike Ali Imran 007, who enjoys a lot of "things" before he takes on the bad guys, I was suppose to deal with gangsters on the very first paragraph.
And there was no sign of Juliana Fitzwater as well...so I refuse!
Someone from the mosque makes me another offer: He can get me a Green card on an Agriculture worker visa, provided I am willing to take up a new name and new identity.
Loss of identity? I would rather go back to India than lose my name. I refuse!
And then comes the all time classic offer: Get married to an American girl on paper, and no one can throw me out.
First marriage, wrong reasons. No romance. I refuse!
I am sure, I can write a few books on " How to be flexible in life to achieve your goals"!!
Court date is upon me!
My first court appearance in any country....
Dona, compares me to Kevin Kostner character of " Dances with Volves", who was hounded by the Federal agents for no good reasons. All he wanted was a peaceful life of love and happiness...
I can live with that...

Love, Dona! ( Part 2)

Early Nov 1989, late evening.

After keeping me in custody while he was filling out paperwork charging me with breaking US laws, the officer allowed me to go. He took my mug shots, my fingerprints and handed me a motion or something stating what US laws I have violated etc. Earlier during the day he drove me to my apartment and did some preliminary search. Looked at my stuff....pics ...and took away my passport.

It was so humiliating to go up to my apartment with my handcuffed like a criminal. My roommates were also in the same "work-boat", so after initial shock of watching me with cops, they were hiding and praying that I don’t reveal their names...

I did not.

The office escorted me out of the building. He blurred " You are a good man Mr. Sayed!"

What a feeling it was to be free again! Yet freedom it was.  To walk without getting noticed. To go anywhere I wanted. I walked and walked all the way to Cheshire Road, an off campus community near Georgia Tech - to my apartment!

Then I went into a serious depression...

Late Nov 1989

My friend Ted Schelling had come over to pick me up. He wanted to take me to some "Dinner for International Students" arranged by some Socio-Cultural organization at a hotel. I had told him and not going, yet he showed up. I was too depressed to be social. He was trying to get me out of my pathetic state of mind. Reluctantly I went with him.

By the time we got there, the program has already begun. The hall was full of international students from all countries. Not many seats were empty. I notice one empty seat in the last row.  Here I was with my unshaven and unkempt sitting there staring at the stage blankly.

The speaker mentioned something and everyone started looking at a pamphlet or something. I did not have one, so I looking around to see what it was...just then white women sitting on my left stretched her hand to show me what it was. I noticed her for the first time. She smiled.

"You can look here!"

That was Dona!

That’s how I met her 25 years ago!!

At the end of the program, the Organizers requested the Americans present in the audience to invite one international student for the Thanksgiving Dinner to their homes.

Dona invited me.

Early Dec 1989

Dona by knows the whole mess that I am in. She wants to help me whatever way possible. I am trying to be brave. But how much brave you can be when you are in a new country, have no job and need money for tuition for the winter session. And yes, you have a court case coming up.

I call up various attorneys from the yellow pages about helping me out. They all quote huge amount. I have problem feeding myself where I am going to get that kind of money. My diet has become "Omletty" these days. I eat egg for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner.

My recent frnd from India N.K. (who is a good story teller in Mumbai film Industry now) offers to take me to the nearest Kroger for shopping essentials. The nearest Kroger was miles away, poor KN used to drive three times that distance to pick me up, take me there, wait till I finish shopping and then drop me back home.

After doing my routine of Maatam (Depression, reasoning and resolution) I have decided to fight it out. I can’t be home sitting all day feeling sorry for myself. I am not going back to India without a fight.

I need a job again. So rejoin the same job. I told myself “they can’t charge me twice for the same crime”

I am doing three jobs now. The Egyptian owner of gift shop was so kind that he hired me back taking a risk with me.
My day starts at 6 am. I am gift shop of Holiday Inn by 7 am. I take off from them at 3:30 pm and come home for lunch. Then I go to my on campus job at gymnasium for 2 hours and then I head for Sandy Spring to work in a Baskin Robbins Ice Cream shop till 11.

All day my mind drifts into calculating my earnings the day in dollars. Then I convert those earnings into Indian currency.

Every night while mid town to my apartment, I go to Georgia Tech to check my mailbox. I am desperately waiting for some letter to arrive from India. With heavy heart and hope I open my mailbox…. only to find letters for Jennifer Drummond, a girl who is sharing my mail box.

Nothing for me!

I come out of Student Center Post office and sit down on one of the steps outside.

I cry.

At the end of those crying sessions, I remind myself “ There is no India for you Shahid, no one except Maa. You are alone. You have to fight this all alone…this is home…. there is no India…. no India now!

Love, Dona!

My birthday wishes card from her has arrived... It is card no 25.
Why 25? Coz she and I have known each other for 25 years!
In these 25 years, between US and India, I have changed my address at least a dozen times. But she always found my address to send me my birthday wishes. Every year....year after year!
A lot changes in 25 years....people meet, fall in love, drift away. Lots n lots of new experiences come and go. Career goes from Arsh to Farsh to somewhere in between. 25 years is a damn long time.....Time is cruel. It changes everything!
Not her...
This time, even time failed to change the arrival of this birthday card from her to me. Even though, at times, I failed in reciprocating the same on her birthday or chose internet cards to wish her. She always stuck to the paper card via snail mail. Same Hallmark card...same last two words " Love, Dona!"
This is her story...
Nov, 1989, Atlanta, GA
I am in serious depression. Have not been eating properly since my arrest. How could someone eat or sleep if the biggest dream of your life ( of getting education in America) just got busted. I am looking at a deportation form the US back to India. My crime: I was working off campus without proper INS permission.
One morning a couple of INS agent approached me in the gift shop I was working at and asked me " Are you Shahid Sayed?". I said " Yes I am"
"You are under arrest...lets go...." all they said and handcuffed me.
My world collapsed right before my eyes. I knew its over. They made me sit in the back of the police car like they do to hardened criminals. I have tears in my eyes. I am thinking of mother. How would she take this....How would she react to see me back in India without my Masters degree in Civil Engineering?
Tears pick up intensity....
I look at the streets of downtown Atlanta.....my story is over within 6 months of arrival in this exciting country. A country of hope, humanity and justice. Now, I will be deported for earning money to pay my bills, to save money for my tuition at Georgia Tech.......to stay alive!

Jaan Bujh Kar Ki Hui Galtiyan...

"Main ne Jaane bujh kar, ya anjaane main jo bhi Galtiyan Ki hain - please Unhen Maaf kar den. Main ek nayi Zindagi Shuru karne jaa rahi hoon....aur......."
Images of "Jaan Boojh Kar Galtiyan" flickered in the the fakeer's mind. Each image triggering new emotions, new thoughts.......There was a long pause...
" Jaa Maaf Kiya .... Khush Reh...!"
Then, they lived happily ever after....

Shahshi Kapoor

The second most romantic man of Indian cinema, Shashi Kapoor gets the most prestigious "Dada Saheb Phalke" award. I grew up watching his films and later became his fan when I discovered more about him.
He, along with his wife Jennifer built the "Prithvi Theatre" in Mumbai. It is said that he spent most of his life's savings on building it. Today, Prithvi is an Iconic institution where one can see quality performances for a reasonable price.
When we grow old, all we look for is a ONE WAY ticket to heaven and well being of our children. To achieve that we spent money on religious causes and its paraphernalia.
This man, too had the option to do the same...but he chose to spend his money on building a World Class Theater, where drama groups can be charged peanuts for performing and audiences very little to watch those performances.
Every seat at Prithvi comes for the same price. There is no priority or preferential seating - its first come fist to grab a seat arrangement. All are equal. So, you could find the biggest names of Bollywood seating behind you and behaving like a normal humans. That's the way it was supposed to be...
Every time I see a play at Prithvi, I smile thinking of this fine actor and a super human being!
Now, since we are at it, think of the greatest and biggest "Heroes" of Indian film industry. Can you name anything that they have done to add color to your life? You MADE them "Super Star", "Tragedy King", and the "Angry Young Man" etc, but all they have done or are doing is to make money, secure a place in heaven by religious means and settle their children....
Those are not the Heroes.....this man Shahshi Kapoor is....
Also, He did not find anyone worth marrying, or having an affair after the death of his girl friend Jennifer Kendall speaks who he really is....but that story is for some other day!
PS: So skip a religious function and take your kids to Prithvi to see a play. Inspire your children by sharing the above facts, coz India needs more contributors to its future than mere heaven seekers!!

Woh Darakht

"Darakht!"
Woh Darakht,
Jo Hamare Ghar Ke Saamne
Ba Masl e Pehre Daar Khada Rehta Tha

Woh Darkaht Jo Tumhen Khsuh Dekh Jhoom Jhoom Uthta Tha
Wohi Darakat Jo Tumhari Zara Si Baat Pe Bhi Hansata Tha

Wohi Darkat Jise Tum Ghanton Nihara Karti Thin
Salaa Kehtaa Nahi Tha, Piyar Woh Bhi Karta Tha

Woh Darkaht Jo Shahid Hamare Din, Hamari Raat Ka Tha
Wohi Darkaht Jo Haasil Hamare Khwaab, Hamari Zaat Ka Tha

Woh Darkaht Jo Badalte Masaum Ki Mushkilen Bhi Sehta Tha
JabTak Sath Tha Tumharaa, Woh Kab Kisi Se Dartaa Tha ???

Woh Darkaht Aaj Kaisa Hai, Kis Haal Main Hai? Kiyoon Hai?
Kisi Din Ye Bhi Socho to
Koi Din Waqt Mile To Use Dekhne Chali Janaa

Kyoon Ke Woh Khud Tum Tak Aa To Nahi Aa Payega
Jadon Ne Baandh Hai Rakha, Himmat Na Juta Payega
Jaden Khokli Bhi Hon To
Zinda Wohi To Rakhti Hain!!

Rang...

"Rang"
Kehte Hain...
Waqt Ke Sath Sab Badal Jata Hai
Rishte, Naate, Chere, Naam

Suraj ke Gird Ghumne Wali Dharti Bhi
Koi Naya mahwar Talash Kar Leti Hai
Jaise Kuch Hu Hi Na Ho..

Yehi Zaroori Hai Shaid
Zindagi Ki Irtiqa Ke Liye
Badalna Laazim Hai
Naye Rishton Se Wafa Ke Liye

To Phir....
Halke Dhaani, Aasmani Rang
Jo Waqte-Rukhsat main
Tumhare Dupatte Pe Chodd Aaya Tha
Woh Kiyoon Nahi Badle?
Ye Batla Do!!

Bas ye batla do...

The Last ride! - March 13, 2003
The historian in me never fails to record moments irrespective of the fact whether they are good, bad, ugly or "self inflicted".

Just realized that the month of March has begun....oh that explains...

The Retard...

"Please buy whatever u want to buy, as I may not open my shop tomorrow. My son is dead" said the shopkeeper in the Khajurahu main market area.
I was surprised to see his deadpan expression when he said the word " Dead". I asked him what had happened?
"He was first violated and then drowned in a well. He was just 7", was the reply with the same dead pan expressions. I found the whole conversation to be weird, so I bought whatever I wanted to buy and left his shop.
However, I did inquire about this incident at another shop in the market. I was told "yes that it is a true story but that guy is a retard".
I went back to his shop again, this time I knew what to do. I tried to talk him about the tragedy so that he could come out of the shock that apparently he was in. I inquired about his wife and how she was taking it. I tried to convince him that both of them should not feel guilty about this....and a few more words of wisdom on how to move on.
Deadpan expressions remained the same....no matter what I said.
Finaly, I asked him a stupid question.
"Why did you have just one? Why not more kids?"
"I wanted to provide proper education to him and raise him to be a big man...that's why I decided to have just one"
As I left his shop for the last time.....I knew who all were the retards.....
It wasn't him, that's for sure!!

Sharab Peena Haram Hai....Lekin...

Sharab Peena Haram Hai......Lekin main ne to.....

Back in the days, on my way back from ATL, I decided to take a Parisian detour and stopped in the city of art and love for a few days.

Paris! Ah Paris......Its a gold mine for an artiste of all hue n colors. Paris is young, Paris is feminine and Paris is beautifully healthy. A few minutes of stroll by the river .....is enough for you to fall in love with it.. There is no other option!

I landed in Mumbai and was trying to catch some sleep when I heard someone calling me out. It was Mirza on his bike. So I went down and he drove me to our usual adda at Nariman Point footpath. I was still sleepy and after a usual talk I wanted to sleep. I made myself comfortable on the bench and slept. Mirza, realizing my jet-leg situation allowed me to rest in peace.

After an hour or so when I woke up, I found Mirza reading a newspaper. He looked up and said

" Yaar Ek Hafte Pehle  Tum US main the, Kal Shaam Tak Paris Main, Aur ab  Footpath Pe So Rahe Ho!"

"Kiya Farak Padta Hai? Arsh Ho Ya Farsh Neend Aani Chaiyye. Baki Sab Semantics Hai!"

I had something else on my mind to discuss with Mirza, so I told him I want to confess something. He put down the paper and look at quizzically.

" Yaar Mirza, Main Ne Galti Se Paris Main Sharab Khayi Hai!"

Mirza bent down to "smell" me for sharab.

"To Beta Ab Tum Ne Sharab Peena Chalu kar Di?"

" Yaar Main Sharab Nahi Peeta.....Main ne Sharab Khaayi Hai Paris Main"

"Sharab Haram Hai......Tumhen Malom Tha Na?"

"Sharab Peena Haram Hai......Lekin Main Ne To Sharab Khayi Hai!"

"Kaise?"

I told him the whole story about one of the days when I got my "free hugs" outside Amsterdam Church I felt hungry for "more", so I went to eat at the nearest cafe by the river.

I could not read the menu as it was all in French. I signaled a waiter and told him that "No Pork for me".  I chose one good looking dish and and inquired if it was pork. The waiter realizing my concern made sounds of chicken crowing "Kukdu Koo". I said Yes thats what I want!!

Thats exactly what he got me. It was tasty - very tasty and delicious. I enjoyed every bite of it. But soon I started feeling a little "tipsy". My body has zero tolerance for lies and Nasha and a small amount of it is enough to make me feel weird. When I inquired from the waiter about the content of the chicken dish, the waiter pointed his finger at the bottle of Red Wine and told me in something in french. Apparently the chicken that I was served so nicely, was marinated all night in wine and spices and which made it more tasty.

"Mirza, Kiya Hum Logon Ko Mullah Ke Paas Jaa Ke Is Ka Hal Maloom Karna Chaiyye?"

" Yaar, Usually Mullah Murge Ke Khilaf Nahi Bolta, Woh Us Se MarOub Hota Hai. Mullah Tum Se Paris Ki Detail Lega aur Footage Khayega"

"Phir Kiya Karen?"

"Meri Mano To Jab Tum Agli Baar Kisi Jungle Main "Fabe Aiye Aala Rabbe Kuma Tukazzebaan" padh Rahe Ho Tab Tum Apne Allah Miya Se Maafi Maang Lena. Woh Raheem Hai...Maaf Kar Dega!"

Thats what I did next....

Its been a few years but even today Mirza brings up this story and reminds me how I slept on a footpath. Even today I tell him the same thing that in the grand scheme of things it does not matter where you sleep as long as you sleep. I am fortunate to have frnds that are like me only. We are not born to carry weight of unrealistic expectations of others. Why should I eat, sleep and carry my life in a way that suits your immature fancy?

A friend of mine once drove me in his brand new Mercez convertible at the speed of 150 MPH ( 230 KMPH) in Atlanta. In a few months he met me at Ville Parle station and from where we took local to Church Gate in sardine packed compartment.  Both of us did not compain about anything as we had no time .... we were busy cacthing up on each other and laughing away to glory!

Thats what gives me high.....thats my nashaa...

Tumhari Tasveer

Tasveer Nikalwate Waqt
Tumhari Aankhon Main
Jis Shaks Ki
Tasveer Saaf Nazar Aati Hai
Wohi Shaks
Tumhari Us Tasveer Ko
Jab Tnahiayon Main Dekhta Hai
Tab Woh Khud Bhi
Tasveer Sa Ho Jataa Hai!!

Is Trah Do Tasveeren
Ek Doosre Ko Dekh Rahi Hoti Hain
Guzrta Waqt
Sar Jhuka Kar
Tasveer-e - kham Ho Jataa Hai

Aur
Jab Tum In Lafzon Se Bani
Is Tasveer Ko Jab Sochogi
Tum Khud Bhi To
Ek Tasveer Hi Ban Jaogi!!

Its sardines time...

This is the time n place I feel sorry for myself, being stuck like sardines in a local train. No matter where u go there is no escaping this in India. This is what others economists call the "population dividend" - a dividend I can live without.
So here I was pissed off n angry, more concerned about the health my MacBook Pro than myself. And suddenly a guy started singing a sad song:

" main ne chaand aye sitaron ki tamanna ki thi
mujh ko raaton ki siyahi kuch na Mila!"
I tried to inject some humor in a F&%$# Up situation so I told him " yaar ghar jaa rahe ho office nahi, u shud be singing happy song!"
He came back with " Ghar jaa raha hoon isi liye to sad song gaa raha hoon. Biwi hai ghar main. Aap to experinced honge"
Hillarious!!
Except perhaps I was always happy going home back in the days....

Milo to Khush aur na Milo to...

Agha Jaani Kashmiri, was a legendary writer n actor who wrote some of the memorable films in 40s, 50s, and 60s. Some of them are Anmold Ghadi, Humayun, Amar, Mujhe Jeene Do, Chori Chori and almost all of Joy Mukherjee's films. In fact he was the one who saw Joy, and pressured his father S. Mukherjee to allow him to act....saying he will take care of his diction and teach him acting.
Anyways. this post is not about him. Its about Ashok Kumar. The picture below is from his autobiography called "Seher Hone Tak", published in 1967 or so. He had dedicated his book to many frnds from the Industry and to Pt. Nehru. In this page he is dedicating it to Ashok Kumar with an interesting anecdote. He writes " Ashok Kumar is a 30 year old frnd, and it was he who dragged Ashok Kumar to Anmol Ghadi and Humayun".
Well, this post is about what he writes next. He says "Whenever I run into Ashok Kumar, he hugs me and says yes to everything I say - even though I may not see him again for a long time. Ashok believes in "Milo to Khush aur Na Milo to Aur bhi Zayada Khush".
That line gave me the 'aha' moment after I bought it from a raddi-wala on a footpath of Bhindi Bazar. This book made me and old man even when I was suppose to be a teenager. This book has lived in two different continents with me.....traveled to many cities internationally. It contains many gems, but the one I internalized was "Milo to Khsuh aur Na Milo to Aur bhi Zayada Khsuh"
Just think about it for a second.....
By believing and living with this dictum you are offering freedom to everyone in your circles. No one is be pressured to see you, at the same time no one is stopped from seeing you as well. Happiness is the result whether you meet or not.....
When frnds meet me after a long time or meet me daily or weekly, I thoroughly enjoy them. I go full throttle on my humor and laugh like there is no tomorrow! I seldom complain to anyone ke why you didn't meet or never called. For me, meeting me after many years is not the topic of reverence, what is important is what we are going to do next......
Coz I have set everyone free with by living Ashok Kumar Mantra " Milo to Khush aur na Milo to Aur Bhi Zadya Khush!"
Try it.....it will set you free for life.....

Kahin aap Mujhe

Ye Baaten Jo Dil Ki Chupaane Lage Hain
Kiya Wakai Mujhe Aap Chahne Lage Hain?

Na Tum Se Mahobbat Thi, Na Hai, Aur Hogi
Kehte Waqt Woh Aankhen Churane Lage Hain

Zameen Pe Pair Nahi, Aasman Aankhon Main
Ab Kiya Hua Kiyoon Itna Itraane Lage Hain?

Pehle Khamosh Taka Karta Tha Tanhaiyan Meri
Ab Chaand Hai Khush, Taare Muskaane Lage Hain

Ek Umr Kati Apne Dasht Ke Hisaar Main Shahid
Ab Kahin Jaa Ke Hosh Thikaane Lage Hain
